Feature and usability

It was early November 2010 and the fever of Windows 7 was on the top of every tech forum. I was very excited with the innovative Windows 7 features like HomeGroup feature, because I have two desktop computers at home, one in my personal room and the other in my office, which is attached with my house and mostly I have to shuffle among both to take out important data related with my personal and business usage.

But it was hard to decide on the compatibility factor of both computers. I went through a lot of research regarding technical support on Google. I was very much messed up. Fortunately I came to know about Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor on Microsoft’s site. I downloaded the program and installed it over both the computers. Next, I connected the printer too with one of my PC. Afterwards I executed the program. This program took hardly 10 minutes to generate a report. I followed the report and did the important modification in the memory and processor part. I upgraded the RAM (Random Access Memory) to 2 GB and replaced the hard disk with a 20 GB HDD. Next I upgraded the processor with 1 gigahertz (GHz) 32-bit (x86) and the memory of graphic card to DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0.

The term and condition was fulfilled for Windows 7 installation and I installed it with a USB flash drive. But post installation scenarios would not have been so smooth but for an authentic tech support from a remote service provider. I took remote technical support sessions of my computers to install the latest device driver and setup and configure my HomeGroup.

Now I can share the data over both my computers along with the printers. I don’t have to shuffle from one PC to another. With the inbuilt Parent Control feature of it, I can restrict my sensitive data from the reach of my kids.

Limitation

There can be certain limitation in the performance of your computer if your memory is not well compatible with the type of applications running in your PC. In addition you can’t expect complete Aero feature on your desktop’s if your graphic card is not compatible.

Something You Must know about Your Windows 7 Computer

Sometimes it happens that you need to find out details about your computer system such as CPU clock speed, How much memory, Version of Operating system and etc. You can find out these details from Control Panel in Windows 7. The System windows of Control Panel displays information about your computer hardware and operating system on a Windows 7 computer, in the given categories:

System This section provides the computer’s Windows Experience Index base score (a number from 1.0 to 7.9), the processor type (such as Intel Pentium 4) and speed (such as 2.80 GHz), the amount of onboard random access memory (RAM) that is available, and the system type (32-bit or 64-bit). This section might also provide information about the manufacturer and model of the computer.

The Windows Experience Index base score shown in the System window is not a cumulative rating; it is the lowest of the individual ratings scored by the following five system components:

Processor speed
● Installed RAM
● General desktop graphics capabilities
● Three-dimensional gaming graphics capabilities
● Primary hard disk data transfer rate


Windows edition. This section keeps information about your operating system including the edition, the most recently installed service pack and, a link to the section of the Microsoft Web site from which you can upgrade your version of Windows.

Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings. In Windows 7 this section displays the computer name and the network domain, workgroup, or homegroup the computer belongs to.

Windows activation. The section displays the Windows activation status and product ID, or if Windows hasn’t yet been activated, provides an online activation link.

Fix Missing Hard Drive Partition

Fix a hard drive partition to keep the existing operating system like Windows XP or Vista intact. This way the trouble of uninstalling will minimize since one would just have to switch to the older operating system by removing the Windows 7 partition and by setting the boot manager.

The usual problem faced by users is that of a missing hard drive partition of Windows XP or Vista when you get it installed in a Windows 7 dual boot system. The problem is normally generated because the drive letter of the operating systems, XP or Vista, have not been assigned in Windows 7.

It is not a big task to resolve this issue though:

Step 1 Go to the Run Command section and click on Start.

Step 2 Type diskmgmt.msc on the search bar. The resulting outcome will pave the way for a Disk Management interface which will automatically open and display all of the connected hard drives and their partitions.

Step 3 At this point of time, select a Drive from the lower half of the disk management interface. Select one which does not have any drive letter.

Step 4 When you are through with this, go to the Context Menu and then right-click and then select on Change Drive Letter and Paths. Now one will have to go to the next menu and click on the add button. Very carefully choose and pick a drive letter which will be made available to you in the pull down menu. We are almost through with the repair now.

Step 5 To confirm the assigned selected drive letter, just click on OK and then do a quick check on the windows explorer or on My Computer. This will enable you to confirm the missing drive from either Windows XP or Vista and also confirm whether it is showing or not.

4.Select the Use a bootable image file option and then click on Browse to locate the bootable disk partition or select the Use a Bootable floppy disc option in which you need to insert a floppy disk into the floppy disc drive after clicking on Burn.
5.Click Ok.
6.When all the content have been added click on Burn Now.
7.Click on Burn, when you are ready to burn your disk, the burn process will be started.
8.When burning process is complete, you need to select an option in the dialog box that will open the View Log to view the burning log,
9.To exit from the program click on OK and then Exit.

In this way a Bootable Data Disc will be prepared using Windows 7 operating system.

Windows 7 in Action: Smarter Search

If Windows 7 has a feature murderer, is ongoing. As shown in the screen cast this week, you may find the search box in Windows 7-in the Start menu, click Control Panel, and Windows Explorer. The indexed search is fast and accurate, in my experience, and the indexing process itself is barely perceptible in terms of performance. The best change, however, is the addition of the search generator, which replaces the clumsy search forms from previous versions and allows you to filter a set of results by date, type, size, or an attribute that is appropriate for an particular type of such data as music or photos.

Every time I write about the search, at least half a dozen commentators are shown in section Talkback to proclaim that it is necessary if you know how to organize files into subfolders. But they miss the point entirely. A well-managed system of filing and rapid search index working together beautifully. As an author, for example, how should I keep my files organized? Do I have all the documents related to a project unique in its own subfolder? Or should I keep a folder of contracts, proposals, and discussed in another project in another and finished chapters elsewhere? And although I have done a perfect job of naming and organizing files, how can I find the contract had a clause on foreign publishing rights I have to talk to my agent in five minutes? A good search tool that can trace file in the second. Without it, I would have to find all contracts in each folder and open each one to see what is inside.
